Health officials in two states are investigating an outbreak in which four separate disease-causing organisms have turned up in people who ate the same product, a combination food safety investigators rarely see.
The Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture told residents Thursday not to eat alfalfa sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands. Twenty-three Minnesotans became ill between July 8 and Aug. 8 with Salmonella, various strains of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, or both. Two were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
