Salem: Electric fence kills tusker in Mettur

SALEM: A 35-year-old tusker was electrocuted after coming in contact with an illegal electric fence on a farmland at Koozhkaradu village in Mettur on Sunday.

Farmer S Pushpanathan, 48, had installed the fence on the land, close to the Mettur reserve forest, forest department officials said. “The elephant, which tried to enter the land, was electrocuted around 3am,” an official said.

Villagers alerted the officials, who rushed to the spot and conducted an autopsy.

Preliminary inquiry revealed that Pushpanathan was not permitted to install the fence. “We have registered a case and initiated an inquiry,” the official added.

The department has launched a search for Pushpanathan.
