Salem: 23 years later, an emotional reunion in Omalur

SALEM: Poosaripatti village near Omalur in Salem has witnessed an emotional reunion of a mother and daughter, who was given away for adoption to a couple in the Netherlands just 11 days after her birth some 23 years ago.

Amuthavalli, who came down to her hometown in search of her biological parents on Thursday, was overjoyed to meet her mother Amudha and elder sister Jenifer, who is aged 25 years. She was, however, sad to learn about the demise of her father Ranganathan, a few years ago.

Amuthavalli said if it wasn't for her skin colour, she wouldn't have ever come to know she was adopted by Piet-Ageetha couple in the Netherlands.

"At one stage, I started asking them why I was black in colour, while they were white. They finally revealed the adoption story to me two years ago," Amuthavalli said.

She said her adopted parents were so caring that she had never felt that she wasn't their own daughter.

Citing poverty as reason for giving away her child for adpotion, Amudha said, "My husband was an alcoholic too. So, we gave Amuthavalli away for adoption to the foreign couple just 11 days after her birth in 1998. I never thought I could see my daughter again."

Amuthavalli said she was so excited to meet her biological mother and she was speechless for a couple of minutes.

Amuthavalli has completed her graduation and is running a bouquet shop in the Netherlands.
