Sainsbury's workers in Ryton left 'shaken' after armed robber steals money and cigarettes

Sainsbury's workers have been left shaken after an armed robber threatened them with a blade before stealing money and cigarettes.

Police were called to the Sainsbury's Local store on Lane Head in Ryton, Gateshead, at around 10.15pm on Wednesday, March 8, following a report of an armed robbery. A man is said to have made threats to staff while holding a blade before stealing the goods.

No-one was injured but staff have been left shaken. Officers have now launched an investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At about 10.15pm yesterday (Wednesday) we received a report of a robbery at the Sainsbury’s Local store on Lane Head, Ryton. It was reported that a man entered the shop in possession of a bladed article and made threats towards staff, before stealing money and cigarettes.

“Nobody was injured but the employees inside the store were left shaken by the incident.

“A full investigation is ongoing to locate those involved. Anyone with information is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log NP-20230308-1173.”
