A major supermarket's move to introduce new packaging for some of its products has created outrage amongst some shoppers. The packaging, introduced by high street retailer Sainsbury's has been described as 'inappropriate' by some shoppers, with others even claiming that it has 'ruined' their food entirely.
In a bid to help the environment, Sainsbury's ditched plastic tray packaging for some of its minced beef products. Instead, the beef mince is now sold in tight vacuum packed packaging. It is a change that affects all of the brands stores.
According to reports, the move has affected its beef mince range and saved a massive 450 tonnes of plastic annually. The retailer says it will result in a minimum 55 per cent reduction in plastic per product. Manchester Evening News wrote that recent environmental reports have made dire reading and one, towards the end of last year, warned that the UK was close to an “irreversible” climate breakdown. More recently, the United Nations chief called on polluting developed nations like the UK to “fast forward” net zero targets by a decade to 2040 - warning the “climate time bomb is ticking”.
