In preparation for the summer season, a browse for the latest on-trend sandals may well take you to the High Street, veering in and out the major retailers and debating about which of their offerings to plump for. However, there may be no need to scour these often pricey options by opting for a supermarket alternative which has proved popular with fashion experts.
Harriet Walker of The Times has revealed that she buys Birkenstock-style sliders for just £6 from Sainsbury’s. With prices soaring amid the cost of living crisis, it will likely be even more pivotal to find the best value bargain deals this year.
However, as Walker argues, you don’t have to go down the disposable fast-fashion route to find your next wardrobe hit. The key to finding value buys with plenty of longevity while also being beneficial to the planet is knowing where to look.

The lowest prices are often found in the country’s various supermarkets and their clothing outlets. Tu is Sainsbury’s offering, and is the sixth largest clothing retailer in the UK by volume.
For those of us who do the weekly shop at a big Sainsbury’s store, their variety of clothes can often prove distracting when the reason you came here was for some milk, bread and cheese. It’s not just clothing either, Walker identified these £6 Birkenstock-esque sliders as an excellent cheap option to put on your feet throughout the summer.
Found in sunshine yellow, orange bear and strawberry pink varieties (just to name a few), these sandals are striking in their appearance given their bold, bright nature. The fashion editor argues that they “bear more than a passing resemblance to a designer version on sale for £200.”
Birkenstocks are timeless sandals which have spawned a multitude of dupes, with retailers the world over selling similar pairs of shoes. They perfectly fuse functionality and fashion to become an essential shoe in many summer wardrobes worldwide.
On the Tu website, the bright orange pool sliders are described as “Easy-on and easy-off, these sliders are the ultimate perfect poolside accessory. With an extra-comfy cushioned sole and a gripped outer sole, their super cute orange shade will get you in the holiday spirit, just add sunshine!”
All four reviewers of their orange product gave it five stars, while 12 people left reviews for their green variety with 11 leaving five stars and one giving it four. The comfort of wearing them was evident in their comments left, with one reviewer stating that they have now bought nine pairs of these sliders in different colours.
Away from these six quid sliders, Sainsbury's also sell a range of the sandals in jazzy patterns. Priced just £1 higher, at £7, varieties of these particular pool sliders come in the form of blue daisy floral, black cheetah print, rose print and tropical print.
