Sadness as 3 closures announced on 'attractive' Nottingham high street

Shoppers in a popular Nottingham high street have spoken of their sadness as it was confirmed three shops in the area had closed. Sherwood is well known for its independent stores and eateries and residents say they don't want to see any empty units in the 'strong' and 'attractive' shopping area.

Gallery A Room Full of Butterflies confirmed it would not continue to operate in 2023 while restaurants Mr Thai and O’More closed recently. Previously, the owners of A Room Full of Butterflies said that the closure of the gallery feels like “a bereavement.”

People on the high street have shared their thoughts about the three closures. Pauline Harvey, 43 from Sherwood said: “We’ve got a strong high street in Sherwood and it seems that when one business closes it isn’t too long until another opens, which is good.

The shops that are closing are ones that I had never been to before but it’s always sad to hear of a shop closing down.” Pauline, who is a nurse, continued: “Sherwood has many pubs, restaurants, a boutique, the Coop.

“I can only imagine that whatever replaces the restaurants will be another restaurant.”

In December 2022, it was announced that ‘popular’ cafe Cafe PAS MAMA would also be closing down. The cafe will close on January 15th.

Agatha Wilkinson, 71, from Sherwood, said: “It’s a worrying time for many businesses and because of that many might be more weary to open something new, shops closing is becoming normal. Hopefully they don’t remain empty for too long and are made of use.”

“I like the coffee shops in Sherwood, I like Cafe Chino and the Pudding Pantry, I think when new shops open if people are in a position to do so, they do go out and show support.”

Sianni Michaels, 34 is a hotel housekeeper. She said: “It’s always a shame when shops close and even though those shops are closing Sherwood still has plenty of options. There are some high streets where if three shops closed it would be worrying.”

Sianni continued: “To me, Sherwood is one of the more attractive places in Nottingham to come to whether it’s for a coffee or a meal, three shops closing won’t deter or put people off the area because there’s plenty of shops.”
