Sadiq Khan apologises to family of woman killed by bus at Victoria station

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has apologised to the family of a woman who was killed by a bus outside Victoria station.

Catherine Finnegan, 56, also known as Kathleen, died after being hit by the vehicle in south London January 29.

Her family were not contacted by Tansport for London (TfL) and have demanded a review of safety and procedures.

The victim’s niece Katrina Finnegan told the BBC: “The silence was troubling considering the amount of crashes and fatalities that take place.

“We want to see how they investigate these incidents and we want to see if the bus contracts are having an indirect impact on safety.

"The drivers are under a lot of pressure. I would be concerned about the working hours of drivers.”

Mr Khan, who is also TfL chair, apologised to the family and pledged to fully review safety at the station and on the bus network.

He told the BBC: "I’ve spoken to the TfL Commissioner Andy Lord and we want to apologise to the family for the treatment they received.

“It’s really important they received a good response from TfL, particularly after the tragedy they have suffered. No-one should be injured going about their business in London.

"It’s really important Victoria bus station is made safer. There’s a review taking place, we will make sure lessons are learned."

Eighty people have died in London in collisions with buses, six of them in bus stations in the last 10 years.

Melissa Burr, 32, died in 2021 after also being hit by a bus. Another woman was seriously injured this summer.

In a previous tribute to Ms Finnegan her family said: “Our beloved daughter, sister, partner, most adored auntie and treasured friend Catherine Finnegan, known as Kathleen, lost her life on 29th January 2024.

"She will be remembered as a very unique lady who had the fast Irish wit and who made her family and friends so very proud of her bright, clever personality.

"She was a whirlwind in any room and lit up this world with her energy, enthusiasm for life and joy.

"She will be forever in our hearts."
