Sadio Mane vows he will "beat Liverpool" as Bayern Munich eye Champions League revenge

Former Liverpool favourite Sadio Mane has insisted that he is ready to down his old side for Bayern Munich if the two sides clash in the Champions League this year.

Mane was part of the Reds team that cruised past the German giants in the Round of 16 back in 2019, with the Senegalese striker bagging a brace to eliminate Bayern in their own backyard. Liverpool went on to win the entire competition after beating Tottenham in the final.

But after six fruitful years at Anfield, Mane will be donning the red of Bayern Munich from now on - and he has already cheekily set his sights on his old club in the battle for European supremacy.

Mane had previously described his strike against Bayern as one of his favourite goals, but he backtracked on that claim slightly when speaking in the official Bundesliga newsletter.

The 30-year-old quipped: “I said maybe my favourite but now I would say second favourite goal, not my first, because he’s my teammate. No, I’m joking… Of course, I think it was a good goal, kind of a good goal. We had a good game. This is behind us. If we’re going to meet again, of course as Bayern Munich we’d beat Liverpool.”

Bayern Munich made Mane their top priority heading into the summer after the forward failed to come to terms with Liverpool over a new long-term deal. And the former Southampton man will now lead the line for the reigning German champions after Robert Lewandowski was finally given the green light to join Barcelona last month.

Mane has already secured his first trophy since arriving in Munich after he bagged a debut goal in Bayern's enthralling 5-3 victory over RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup final last weekend - but the striker is hungry for more silverware.

Bayern failed to regain their European crown last term after winning the Champions League back in 2020, but they cruised to the Bundesliga title ahead of Borussia Dortmund. And Mane is determined to repeat that achievement this term after he was denied domestic glory with Liverpool on the final day of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign.

He added: “I don’t think it’s easy. I want to be clearer. If you play for Bayern Munich,I came here to win all the games possible. Of course, to win all the trophies. Of course, before the beginning of the season our target is to win all the trophies possible. I’m here to help my teammates and to achieve our dreams.”
