Sadio Mane receives fitting new honour in Senegal after inspiring historic AFCON win

Sadio Mane is to have a stadium named after him in his home city of Sedhiou after inspiring Senegal to their historic Africa Cup of Nations success.

Liverpool star Mane fired home the winning penalty in last Sunday's shootout final victory over his clubmate Mohamed Salah's Egypt, landing Senegal their first ever AFCON title.

The victory sparked jubilant scenes in the nation's capital Dakar, with Mane and teammates greeted by thousands of fans during an open top bus parade.

The team met Senegal president Macky Sall - with Mane performing one of his customary celebrations in front of him - and the squad were greeted as returning heroes.

Now Adboulaye Diop, the mayor of Sedhiou, says the football stadium in the region will be named after its favourite son.

"I would like, through this decision to give the name of Sadio Mane to the Sedhiou stadium, to translate the recognition of all the worthy sons of the region," said Diop, via RMC Sport.

"Sadio Mane honoured Senegal, the region of Sedhiou and all of Casamance. Mane amply deserves this gift."

Mane has been responsible for several charitable acts in his home town in the past, pledging money to building a hospital and providing funds to aid the fight against Covid-19.

Speaking in a documentary about his life in 2020, Mane said: “When you see these kind of people and the offerings in front of the house, you think: ‘Wow, I have to work even harder for them.

“Maybe if there had been a better school when I was younger maybe I could have studied more. But it was not the case – I was in the village.

"So all the boys there want to play football and no one wants to go to school any more. They just want to be a footballer like me …

"But I always tell them to make sure they have to be well educated and go to school. Of course they can keep playing football but it will help you more to be successful in what you are doing if you do both. It’s not like when I was young any more because it was very difficult back then.”

Mane is now back in the UK and is expected to feature for Liverpool in their trip to Burnley on Sunday, having missed Thursday night's 2-0 win over Leicester City.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp said: "Sadio will come for training this morning and then we will make a decision after that.

"Physically, we have to see how intense the past few days have been for him."
