Sadio Mane benched as replacement Bayern wonderkid, 17, breaks Bundesliga record

Sadio Mane failed to make Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann's starting line-up for the home game against Stuttgart - but that was soon overshadowed by the exploits of Mathys Tel.

The 17-year-old sensation made history as his 36th minute strike ensured he became Bayern's youngest ever goalscorer in the Bundesliga. After an impressive run down the left-flank from teammate Alphonso Davies, who then played an inviting pass into the area, Tel guided the ball into the back of the net with a composed left-footed strike.

Remarkably, that goal marked the second record Tel broke on Saturday afternoon. The first came when he was named in the starting XI, in turn becoming the youngest player in Bayern's Bundesliga history to start a game, at just 17 years and 136 days old.

Tel is seemingly on a one-man mission to break as many records as possible in the opening exchanges of his Bayern career. Just last week, the teenager became the youngest competitive goalscorer in the club's history with a strike against Viktoria Koln in the DFB-Pokal (German Cup).

Signed from French outfit Rennes in the summer, plenty of European giants were interested in landing Tel's signature but it was Bayern who won the race. As a result, the Bavarian giants are reaping the benefits with the 17-year-old's stellar form in front of goal.

As for Mane, the Senegal international has very little reason to fear for his place in the first team despite his omission from the starting line-up against Stuttgart.

Bayern welcome La Liga titans Barcelona to the Allianz Arena in midweek for the second fixture of their Champions League group-stage campaign. The first came in the form of a well-earned 2-0 victory away at Italian force Inter Milan.

It is incredibly likely that Nagelsmann has one eye on the visit of Xavi's side and wants to keep Mane as fit as possible for that contest as Bayern look to improve on last season's showing in Europe's elite club competition.

Bayern were on the wrong end of a shock elimination at the hands of Villarreal, with Unai Emery's Yellow Submarine dumping Nagelsmann's side out at the quarter-final stage.

A 2-2 draw against Stuttgart on Saturday ensured Bayern maintained their lead at the top of the German top flight, with nearest challengers Hoffenheim on the same amount of points but trailing on goal difference. That being said, Nagelsmann will not have been happy to see his side drop points for the third consecutive league game.

Stuttgart were deserving of their point, which was earned at the death as Serhou Guirassy converted an added-time penalty, which was awarded after VAR intervened.
