Sabrage at Lafayette review: 'an onslaught of flexing, frotting and twerking'

Spencer Novich and Emma Phillips - (Matt Crockett)

If you like seeing hardbodies in underwear perform circus acts and burlesque routines while lipsynching to Edith Piaf and the Scissor Sisters, this studiedly louche show will be right up your alley. Sabrage, co-produced by Aussie camp-meisters Strut and Fret and the Menier Chocolate Factory, is the latest attempt to bring faux-raunchy cabaret to the capital and it’s got more technical finesse – and a fitter cast – than its predecessors.

As with all such shows it’s more tease than strip, and I’d personally like more acrobatics and less audience humiliation. But this is an all-in experience where we’re encouraged to eat, drink and take pictures throughout (though “no filming during nudity,” boo). Where taut bodies of all genders fly over our heads and shake their booties in our faces. It’s directed by Scott Maidment, who helmed Madonna’s Rebel Heart tour. The party atmosphere he cooks up in this King’s Cross music venue is a heady one.
