S&P 500: Nvidia, AMD Among Big Stock Market Winners Monday

Nvidia and rival AI chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices were among the top S&P 500 index gainers on the stock market today. EQT Corp., Darden Restaurants, and Albemarle also were in the top five.

EQT stock jumped 4.9% to 33.72, but not far from a 52-week low set earlier this month. Natural gas producer EQT benefited from a 5.3% jump in U.S. natgas futures.

AMD stock popped 4.5% to 155.28, just above its 50-day line and just below its 200-day. Early Monday, AMD announced a $4.9 billion deal to buy ZT Systems, one of the largest private providers AI training and inference infrastructure.

Darden Restaurants rallied 4.4% to 149.68, moving clearly above its 50-day line but still well below its 200-day. The owner of Olive Garden, Ruth's Chris and other chains is trying to bounce back from a 2024 low in July.

Nvidia stock advanced 4.35% to 130. Already actionable from clearing the 50-day line late last week, NVDA stock topped a trendline entry on Monday. Shares have risen for six straight sessions, with Fed chief Jerome Powell speaking on Friday and Nvidia earnings due Aug. 28. The AI chip giant has buy points of 136.15 and 140.76.

While most of Monday's winners are 2024 laggards or losers, Nvidia is the No. 1 performer in the S&P 500 index, up 162.5% so far this year.

Albemarle stock gained 4.3% to 82.78, but is still well below its long-sliding 50-day and 200-day lines. Shares of the lithium giant hit a four-year low last week.
