Rylan Clark bites back at social media followers after claiming 'I can't believe I'm saying this'

Rylan Clark was quick to bite back after he exclaimed 'I can't believe I'm saying this' as he shared a series of images to both his Instagram and Twitter accounts. Like plenty of others across the county, the BBC Radio 2 host nipped outside on Monday night (February 27) as the Northern Lights were amazingly visible in the UK.

While many make the trip to Iceland in an attempt to see the incredible light phenomenon, which occur as a direct result of solar activity colliding with the Earth's atmosphere, the Aurora Borealis lit up the skies in some parts of the country on Sunday and Monday night.

Head of space weather at the Met Office Mark Gibbs explained that the clarity of the northern lights on Sunday night was the result of a perfect combination of a cloud-free sky, clear air, and a dim moon. The activity over the past few days was the result of a large solar storm, which Mr Gibbs said was not unusual for this point in the solar cycle.

"What we saw (on Sunday) was a bubble of magnetised plasma particles that had come off the sun, and they happened to be heading towards the Earth in this instance," he said. "It took about two days for those particles to arrive from the sun, then the particles enter the Earth’s upper atmosphere and excite atoms.

"The most common sight is green, which is the result of oxygen atoms being excited. (On Sunday) night we saw some reds and purples, indicative of nitrogen atoms being excited."

And Rylan, 34, couldn't contain his excitement as he took to social media to post a snap of his view from his modern Essex mansion. The Strictly It Takes Two host posted a rather blurry picture of a pink, green and blue sky, as he wrote: "Ok I can’t believe I’m saying this but my entire life I’ve wanted to see the northern lights…. Not the best pic but this is from my ACTUAL house in ESSEX 5 mins ago. I think I’ve caught it?!?"

He then posted more images as he added: "Few more with the shadows brought down." But it appears not everyone was as convinced as Rylan was, and wasted no time in letting him know. And he was also quick to clap back.

One said: "I live down the road to you and I've got nothing," to which the TV and radio star replied: "Point your camera towards Ongar!" And they soon took their first message back as they got a clear look with their camera. Another said: "Don't you see this as a problem? ‘Northern Lights’ - Essex," to which Rylan replied: "It’s visible across the whole UK tonight mate."

Another fumed: "that’s light pollution. I live in North Wales with costal views & it’s not visible from here." But Rylan didn't falter and commented back: "Mate get your camera out and take a pic."
