Ryanair travel rules you need to know for 2023

Holiday bookings are set to spike in the next few weeks as air fares remain relatively cheap for the month of January.

The first Saturday of January has been coined "Sunshine January" as it is the most popular date of the year for someone to book a foreign trip. The rules surrounding travel with airlines such as Ryanair are therefore worth checking ahead of upcoming holidays.

Here is a list of Ryanair travel rules for passengers flying out of Ireland. From face masks to hand luggage, here is what you need to know:

Face masks

Currently there is no requirement from Ryanair officials for passengers to wear face masks while on board. The airline previously scrapped mandatory face coverings on May 16, with the exception of flights to/from destinations where EU governments still require mandatory mask wearing on public transport.

Ryanair recommends that passengers check the latest Covid-19 restrictions and requirements of your destination/arrival countries ahead of travel in case of any changes.

Hand and cabin luggage

All Ryanair fares include one small personal bag, which can be brought on board. This includes a laptop bag or a regular handbag, but it must fit underneath a passenger's seat. This must be a maximum of 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.

Oversized cabin baggage will be refused at the boarding gate, or where available, placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee of €69.99 (fee subject to VAT on domestic flights at applicable government rates).

The Priority and 2 Cabin Bags policy allows passengers to board the plane ahead of time for convenience. Passengers can bring their small personal bag alongside a 10kg suitcase, which must be stored in the overhead locker.

Meanwhile, passengers travelling with heftier luggage must avail of luggage check in. Bags must be dropped at the airport check-in desk before security and will be placed in the aircraft hold.

Passengers can either book a 10 kg or a 20 kg bag to be dropped off at security ahead of their scheduled flight. Passengers can purchase up to 3 checked bags of 20kg on their booking.

Infant baggage

Parents travelling with precious cargo can carry 2 items of baby equipment free of charge. While there is no cabin bag allowance for infants, parents are permitted to carry a baby bag of up to 5kg on their laps while travelling.

Check-in rules

Make sure to check in online at least 2 hours before your flight departs. Those who have not checked in less than two hours before their flight departs will be slapped with an airport check in fee, which is €55 per person, or €30 for flights to and from Spain.
