A tense landing was captured on camera as a pilot was forced to come in to land sideways due to very strong winds .
The Ryanair jet was headed to Madeira Airport when it encountered intense turbulence. In what must have been a nerve-wracking start to a holiday for passengers, the plane can be seen struggling to right itself on course against the huge gusts of wind.
In footage captured by Madeira Aviation , the aircraft shudders as it comes down to the ground, before the wind causes it to veer to the side just metres away from touching down on the runway. The nose is left pointing towards the nearby hills before the pilot expertly gets things back under control, The Mirror reports .

The skilled pilot manoeuvres the plane back to the right so that it lines up with the runway, managing to make a bumpy landing as soon as the wheels are pointing forwards. The plane continues to be affected by the winds until it touches down, swaying from side to side before the sudden friction on the wheels causes a plume of smoke to billow out behind the jet.
Plane enthusiasts at Madeira Aviation regularly film planes coming into the Portuguese airport, with the landing strip often affected by strong winds coming off the Atlantic. The tense clip was posted on their YouTube page, and a man called Adam Uppsala said that he was the pilot responsible for landing the plane back in May.
“I was the pilot of this flight," he claimed. “I'm very surprised someone was filming the touch down. Thank you very much for all your kind comments - they mean a lot. See you on board soon!”
Another commenter added: “I was a passenger on that flight that day! It was quite a scary landing, felt relieved to be on the ground, although the landing was really hard. My pilot did a great job!”
