Planned strikes at major airlines threaten to cause travel chaos for Irish holidaymakers this weekend, as staff at Ryanair and easyJet in Spain are taking industrial action over pay.
Meanwhile, British Airways staff at Heathrow airport have voted to strike which will also affect several Irish flights. EasyJet crews in Spain will strike for nine days in July, while Ryanair staff are doing a three day walk-out from June 30 to July 2.
Holidaymakers will be informed if their flights are cancelled this weekend, although last week's strike affected "less than 2 per cent of 9,000 flights" according to Ryanair.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "Ryanair expects to operate a full schedule to/from Spain this weekend (30thJune, 1st July & 2nd July) despite minor and poorly supported labour strikes in Spain.”
Ryanair are not the only airline to be facing walkouts this weekend, with easyJet on-board crew in Spain set for nine days of strike action, starting from this week between July 1 and 3. The strikes will see three 72-hour stoppages at fortnightly intervals, with hundreds of crew stopping work at easyJet’s bases in Barcelona, Malaga and Palma.
Ryanair strike dates:
Ryanair staff’s three-day walkout over pay in Spain began yesterday Thursday, 30 June and will run until July 2.
The walk-out will affect flights at 10 bases across the country - Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Alicante, Sevilla, Palma, Valencia, Girona, Santiago de Compostela and Ibiza.
Ryanair said it did not expect widespread disruption and claimed most crew would not support the planned action.
EasyJet strike dates:
easyJet workers in Spain will walk out in three phases across the month - From 1 July to 3, 15 to 17 July and 29 to 31 July
The three 72-hour stoppages, at fortnightly intervals, would see hundreds of crew strike at easyJet’s bases in Barcelona, Málaga and Palma.
Workers who belong to the Spanish USO union are looking for a 40% pay rise in low-paid cabin staff’s basic wage.
