Ryan Tubridy amazed as woman run over by two trains lives to tell the tale on his RTE show

Ryan Tubridy was left dumbfounded when a guest on his radio show detailed her miraculous survival after being run over by two tube trains.

Sarah de Lagarde lost her arm and leg in the horrendous accident after falling between the gap of the train and platform at High Barnet Station in North London on September 30.

Medics who saved her life said she could have died “ten times” on the night.

RTE presenter Tubridy said Sarah’s story was “one of the most extraordinary stories” that he’s ever heard.

Speaking this morning, Sarah explained that she was working late and couldn’t get a taxi home so opted to get the tube.

She told Ryan Tubridy: “It was raining outside … I was keen to get home really fast. We were supposed to pack our bags to go to Germany for my dad’s 70th birthday.

“I couldn’t get a cab home and so I decided to take the tube instead.

“I remember sitting in my seat in the tube carriage, I was really tired and I said ‘oh I’m just going to rest my eyes for two minutes’ and then I woke up at the end of the line. I panicked.”

Sarah said she realised she needed to get another tube back into London.

Detailing how her accident happened, she said: “So I run but because it had rained so much. There were puddles in the station and I slipped.

“I lost my footing and I slipped … and fell into the closing doors. It was about to depart … I broke my nose and two front teeth and instead of falling backwards, I slid sideways into the gap and the train.

“The train departed and I found myself lying on the ground. In between the railway tracks and the platform, there is a slight curve and I just rolled myself into that curve.”

Sarah added: “I remember thinking I can’t feel my right side, I looked to the right at my arm and I realised that it was gone. I didn’t know about the foot that was kind of a surprise afterwards.”

The inspirational mum-of-two said adrenaline took over and she could feel no pain in that moment.

In a desperate attempt to raise the alarm, Sarah crawled across the track after spotting her phone.

She explained: “The phone wouldn’t recognise my face because I had broken my nose and it was full of blood.

“I tried to type in my code, it didn’t recognise my fingerprints because the phone was wet. I had to resort to shouting for help … I shouted for quite some time but nobody heard me.

“I shouted ‘somebody please help me, my name is Sarah and I don’t want to die.”

Sarah, who had recently returned from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, said she knew she wasn’t supposed to die that day and that could picture her husband and children and was determined to survive.

She recalled how she heard an incoming train coming towards her and said it still “haunts” her to this day.

Sarah managed to get close to the wall and continued screaming for help but is unsure if this tube made contact with her admitting her memory had become “fuzzy” and said she was losing a lot of blood.

She was eventually rescued by paramedics before her arm and foot were amputated.

Sarah also spent six weeks in a rehabilitation hospital where she learned to walk again.

She added: “The doctors afterwards said I was a complete miracle because I could have died ten times that day, first being run over by the tube, then I crawled over the tracks … I could have electrocuted myself.”

The Londoner revealed she now has a completely new outlook on life.

She explained: “I think about the accident on a daily basis but not in a bad way in a way that I am grateful. I’m very very lucky that I am alive and I’m conscious of that.

“I look at my children and I want to spend time with them, I think they’re beautiful. I look at my husband and I’m so excited to be here and to be alive. All of the little things that would have annoyed me maybe before is gone out the window.”
