Ryan Seacrest 'in talks' for Wheel Of Fortune job despite Whoopi Goldberg interest

Ryan Seacrest is said to be in line to replaced the legendary Pat Sajak on popular gameshow Wheel Of Fortune.

Veteran presenter Pat, 76, announced he was to leave his role on the show after over 40 years in a statement on Monday.

He explained on Twitter "the time has come" to hand over the hosting duties after 41 seasons of the popular show.

"It's been a wonderful ride, and I'll have more to say in the coming months," he told his fans.

And former Live with Kelly and Ryan star is reportedly in talks to take over the reins.

TMZ reports the 48 year old has been in talks with Sony about the role and has hinted he has time in his schedule to make the filming work.

It's thought Ryan's link with late Merv Griffin, who created the show, could be a deciding factor in him landing the gig.

However, he is to face competition for the job, with Whoopi Goldberg also throwing her name into the mix.

During a recent episode of daytime talk show The View, the actress-turned-panelist discussed longtime Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak retiring from the programme after 40 years.

Whoopi admitted live on air: "I want that job! I think it'd be lots of fun."

And her The View co-panellists joked they could be her assistants on the show should she take over the role.

Joy Behar jested her and Sara Haines could fill in for Wheel of Fortune's co-host Vanna White and "take turns walking back and forth, pointing to the letters".

It wouldn't be Whoopi's first crack at the gameshow world. The Sister Act star previously served as an executive producer and permanent "centre square" on the revival of Hollywood Squares for four years between 1998 and 2002.

Pat first took on the role of presenting Wheel of Fortune in 1981. Back then, he was the daytime host, but soon took over nighttime hosting duties in 1983.

Despite retiring from being the face of the show, Pat is set to continue as a consultant for a further three years.
