Hibs have signed Huddersfield goalkeeper Ryan Schofield on a season-long loan after back-up Kevin Dabrowski was crocked in training.
The 22-year-old heads back to the Premiership after making three appearances on loan at Livingston three seasons ago and is expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday’s trip to face St Mirren. Lee Johnson had to move quickly to land Schofield after Dabrowski damaged shoulder ligaments in a training ground collision on Thursday leaving Hibs with no senior back-up to David Marshall.
The Polish keeper has been ruled out for a minimum two months and with third choice Murray Johnson loaned out to Airdrie it left Johnson scrambling for a replacement. Now Schofield will provide competition for the number one jersey and with his contract at Huddersfield up next summer could potentially be looking for a longer stay in Leith should he impress between now and the end of the season.
Manager Lee Johnson said: After Kevin’s injury, it was important that we brought in another good young ‘keeper to add extra competition in the goalkeeping area.
“Ryan is someone that has experience of the Scottish league, has performed well in the English Championship, and has a lot of ability. Not only that, but he’s also another good character to add to the dressing room. We welcome him to Hibernian FC and look forward to working with him.”
The former England U20 cap hasn’t featured for Huddersfield since being injured in an FA Cup victory over Burnley in January, one of only three appearances he made last season. Schofield has experience of the Scottish Premiership, albeit brief, having spent a short time on loan at Livingston in 2020.
However, the keeper was injured very early on for the Lions. He made two Scottish Cup appearances against Raith Rovers and Inverness CT before suffering a knee injury. That limited him to just one further appearance in a 1-0 loss to Rangers - in which Schiofield was outstanding, before spending the remainder of the season on the bench until the campaign was cut short due to Covid.
