Ryan Reynolds posts emotional update on morning after historic Wrexham promotion party

Ryan Reynolds has quipped that "everything smells like champagne and beer" in an emotional social media post following Wrexham's boozy promotion party on Saturday night.

The Hollywood megastar, who purchased the club with Rob McElhenney back in February 2021, was in attendance at the Racecourse as Wrexham ended their 15-year exile from the Football League in style courtesy of a 3-1 triumph over play-off contenders Boreham Wood.

The result, which was sealed with a stunning brace from star man Paul Mullin in the second half, sparked jubilant scenes in north Wales as fans streamed onto the pitch before the players participated in wild dressing room celebrations complete with booze and songs late into the night.

And the Deadpool star has now spoken on social media the morning after the night before. He tweeted: "Everything I own smells like champagne, beer and grass. I’m still somewhere between giggling and sobbing. This town and this sport is one of the most romantic things on earth. Thank you, @Wrexham_AFC".

Reynolds and McElhenney were joined by Ant-Man star Paul Rudd for Saturday's seismic promotion decider against Boreham Wood, who took a shock lead after just 43 seconds.

But Elliot Lee restored parity for the Dragons before the half-time interval. And Mullin, who has now bagged 46 goals this season, stepped up to put the seal on promotion with a brilliant brace which left McElhenney in tears at the end of the match.

Speaking to BT Sport after the pitch had been cleared, Reynolds admitted that the jubilant scenes had left him genuinely lost for words. He said: "I am not sure I can process what happened tonight. I am still a little speechless.

"[People ask] 'Why Wrexham?'. This is why Wrexham. This happening, right now, is why. Boreham Wood showed up today. They are an incredible team. They have one of the best defences in the entire league."

Reynolds also took the opportunity to pay tribute to second-placed Notts County, who have pushed the Dragons all the way but will now have to go through the play-offs.

He added: "This entire story, the reason we are all on edge of our seats is because Notts County are so damn good. They deserve to go up. We are rooting for Notts County. We want to see them go up."

McElhenney chimed in after Reynolds had paid tribute to Wrexham's title rivals. The Always Sunny in Philadelphia star added: "Well I think we can hear what it feels to the town. It's a time of celebration and be welcomed into their community and be welcomed to this, it is the honour of my life."
