Ryan Reynolds has jumped on the ‘Gareth Bale to Wrexham’ bandwagon by following co-owner Rob McElhenney in trying to lure the Wales legend out of retirement.
McElhenney had previously attempted to persuade Bale to have 'one last magical season’ at the Racecourse after Wrexham secured promotion to League Two.
Although many believe the squad will prove strong enough to challenge for promotion again, it couldn’t hurt to bring in a five-time Champions League winner and Wales legend to help the cause, could it?
McElhenney had invited Wales’ record goalscorer for a round of golf, promising the Welshman on social media: “I totally won’t spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season.”
Bale responded to the golfing invite with a 'Depends what course' tweet of his own, before suggesting Open venue St Andrews as a possible location.
That was enough for Reynolds to jump into the exchange in familiar style - at the tongue-in-cheek expense of his Wrexham co-owner and fellow Hollywood actor.
“I will shave a professional-grade golf course into Rob’s back if you’ll give Wrexham a season,” Reynolds replied to Bale’s tweet. Before adding: “Update: after an online image search, it appears Rob does not have the requisite body hair to support this plan.”
Unlikely though it may be for Bale to come out of retirement and don the red shirt of Wrexham, the one person who could change his mind is McElhenney, according to Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker.
Speaking on Elis James’ Feast of Football podcast, Ker said: “If you watch the documentary he got Parky (manager Phil Parkinson) to come to us. Phil was feeling at this stage of his career he should be looking at a Championship level gig.
“Rob is enthusiastic, persuasive, he’s passionate, convinced Phil this wasn’t a gimmick which is one of the hardest things to do.
“That’s got easier now, people in football look at us and they’re like ‘oh these guys are really, genuinely, truly trying to do this'.”
