Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds has clearly got a taste for owning sports organisations after buying Wrexham AFC, but he will need a bit of help to acquire another team.
Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham in 2021, and it's been the perfect relationship ever since with the Hollywood duo embracing the culture, and the fans ecstatic they're on board. However, Reynolds wants something a little closer to home, and what's more fitting for the Canadian than to own a NHL franchise.
The Ottawa Senators could be looking for new owners with the Melnyk family open to selling the organisation. Reynolds is interested, but has claimed he would need backing via a consortium to do so.
Reynolds has declared that he'd like to become a NHL team owner, and has a love for Ottawa after living near the Canadian capital. The Hollywood star is keen to add to his portfolio, and essentially plead for some help on The Tonight Show in America.
"I am trying to do it," Reynolds said to ‘The Tonight Show’ when asked about the idea of buying the Senators. "But it’s very expensive. I need a partner with very deep pockets."
The Melnyk family that own the Senators have explored the possibility of handing over the organisation after Eugene Melnyk passed away seven months ago. The Senators has been valued at £571million, a big jump from the £2m fee that Reynolds and McElhenney paid for Wrexham.
Reynolds remains keen though, and has put the bait out there for a richer businessman to pounce on. The actor even joked that he needed a 'sugar daddy' to help fund yet another dream.
"It’s called a consortium when you form a group together to buy an entity," Reynolds added. "It’s a fancy way of saying I need a sugar mummy or a sugar daddy."
But unlike some owners who purchase club for purely financial reasons, Reynolds has proven that he is a big lover of sport with his commitment at Wrexham. Ice hockey is a huge passion of Reynolds', as it is for millions of other Canadians.
Reynolds has ties to Vancouver and Ottawa, and with the Vancouver Canucks not up for sale at this moment in time, that leaves the Senators as the realistic option. "I grew up in Vancouver which has my heart, always," Reynolds claimed.
"But I also grew up in Ottawa. I spent a long time in Vanier, which is a little town right inside Ottawa."
