Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney put on boozy treat for Wrexham fans to mark first year

Wrexham's owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have laid on a treat for the club's fans to toast their first year at the helm of the non-league club.

The Hollywood duo completed their takeover of the National League club in February 2021.

In that time they have raised the profile of the Welsh club, investing in the playing squad, securing a high-profile sponsorship with TikTok, adding the club to popular video game franchise FIFA and have set out ambitious plans to one day reach the Premier League.

There is also a documentary in the pipeline that will cover the duo's eye-raising purchase of the Dragons.

Will Wrexham earn promotion to the EFL this season? Let us know in the comments

Now, to mark their first anniversary as owners, Reynolds and McElhenney have laid on a bar tab for fans to take advantage of on Wednesday.

The pair have made 365 gin and tonics available - one for every day they've been in charge - at the Turf Hotel pub which is attached to the club's Racecourse Ground.

A message from the owners was posted on Wrexham's Twitter page, which read: “Dear Wrexham. Firstly, thank you for reading this flyer. We weren’t sure if anyone ever looked at these.

“Just a quick note to thank each and every one of you on our one-year anniversary with the club. The love and adoration for Wrexham FC - it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

“That’s why we’ve put up 365 Aviation Gin and Tonics behind the bar. Have one on us. Until we speak again, via a haphazardly posted flyer or otherwise - cheers, Rob and Ryan.”

Wrexham were many people's favourites to lift this year's National League title but they are currently sitting seventh, in the final play-off spot.

Phil Parkinson, the experienced former Sunderland and Bolton boss appointed last summer, is under no illusions as to the fact he will be expected to deliver promotion this term.

Parkinson has been given a more-than-healthy budget as the club look to end a 14-year absence from the Football League.

On Wednesday morning Reynolds and McElhenney posted a lengthy, heartfelt message to fans on the Wrexham website.

In it, they spoke of their admiration for the club and the community and referenced their maiden visit to the club, which only came last October after Covid rules prevented them from attending prior.

In it, they wrote: "It is difficult to believe that it is a year ago today, we became the owners of the club and pledged to be good custodians.

"The year has gone in the blink of an eye, we have learned so much and more importantly feel like we are fully integrated into everything Wrexham.

"There can be no doubt that the highlight of the year was our visit in October. The reception, experience and general feel of warmth moved both of us beyond anything we could have possibly imagined and made us even more determined to be successful."

They add that: "we are proud of the progress to date, although we are only just getting started."
