Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have expanded their investment in Wrexham, north Wales, by acquiring Wrexham Lager, the city's historic brewery. This move comes four years after the duo purchased Wrexham's struggling soccer team, Wrexham AFC.
Established in 1882, Wrexham Lager proudly holds the title of the oldest British lager brewery still in operation. As a sponsor of Wrexham AFC, the brewery has now gained celebrity co-owners in Reynolds and McElhenney, who aim to support its global production and distribution endeavors.
Reynolds and McElhenney, in a joint statement, expressed their enthusiasm for contributing to the next chapter of Wrexham Lager, citing the brewery's rich 140-year-old recipe and storied legacy.
The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but it was revealed that Reynolds and McElhenney hold a majority stake in the brewery through their joint venture, Red Dragon Ventures. Additionally, the New York-based Allyn family has become a minority investor in Wrexham AFC, further solidifying the Hollywood duo's ties to the city.
Since taking ownership of Wrexham AFC in late 2020, Reynolds and McElhenney have overseen the club's impressive ascent through the English soccer league system, culminating in their current position in League One, the third tier of English football.
The duo's involvement has not only elevated Wrexham AFC's profile but has also boosted the city's global visibility through the launch of the documentary series 'Welcome to Wrexham.' This increased exposure has had a positive impact on local businesses like Wrexham Lager, enhancing tourism and trade in the area.
Reynolds, known for his previous ownership of Aviation Gin, retains an ongoing interest in the spirit following its sale to Diageo in 2020 for a reported $610 million. The Roberts family, credited with reviving Wrexham Lager in 2011 after a hiatus in production, will continue to be co-owners alongside Reynolds and McElhenney.
This latest investment by Reynolds and McElhenney underscores their commitment to Wrexham's community and economy, further solidifying their presence in the city's cultural and business landscape.
