Ryan Kent and Rangers have Owen Hargreaves swooning as winger earns French legend comparison

Owen Hargreaves likened Ryan Kent to French legend Franck Ribery and reckons top clubs will be have stood up and took notice after his dazzling Dortmund display.

Former England and Bayern Munich star Hargreaves was blown away by Kent’s performance in Rangers’ stunning 4-2 win in the Westfalenstadion.

The Champions League winner and four-time Bundesliga champ raved about the former Liverpool winger.

Speaking of Kent, Hargreaves said BT Sport: “It almost looked like it was Franck Ribery terrorising Borussia Dortmund the way he used to do for Bayern Munich.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if teams in the Premier League or Bundesliga are looking because that is a performance that you have to sit back and think ‘wow, that is a special player’.

“He shocked everyone and the Dortmund players wouldn’t have known much about him but you can guarantee at the end of the game every player in the dressing room would have said ‘who’s that guy?’.

“It was absolutely exceptional, the control and the quality. Running at players is Ryan Kent’s greatest attribute. I love watching Ryan Kent. Technically he’s absolutely brilliant.”

Hargreaves piled praise on Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men for the way they dismantled Dortmund on their own patch but knows with the possible return of Erling Haaland for the second leg and that late second goal for the Germans that the tie is not over yet.

He said: “The second goal gives them, not half a chance but maybe a tenth of a chance! Erling Haaland would have been devastated watching that.

“He might play at the weekend against Borussia Monchengladbach and if he plays it’s a completely different game - he could probably score three goals in 10 minutes!

“But for Rangers and their fans to go and get a result like that is huge. To go and win the way they did would have been the shock of the evening, without question.

“Dortmund have had a decent season in the Bundesliga but that would have been a huge shock to everyone in Germany - I don’t think anyone would have seen that performance coming.

“But you have to credit Rangers because they forced a lot of the mistakes and that was a great advantage to take back to Ibrox.

“It must be one of Rangers’ best ever results. That is a really difficult place to go and try and win a game of football.

“Everyone would have said Dortmund were heavy favourites but Rangers played absolutely brilliant.

“They were brilliant on the counter attack but clinical when they needed to be. They scored brilliant goals, good on set pieces and the recipe was perfect.”
