Ruud van Nistelrooy responds to Cody Gakpo to Manchester United transfer links

PSV Eindhoven head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has brushed off suggestions that Manchester United are interested in signing winger Cody Gakpo ahead of the transfer window slamming shut in just over a fortnight's time.

United, as reported by Sky Sports last week, are interested in bringing the talented Dutchman to Old Trafford, as Erik ten Hag aims to beef up his attacking options. The addition of a new winger has been one of the United manager's leading priorities throughout this summer's window.

Initially, United had targeted Ajax ace Antony as their top target, but the Dutch heavyweights have slapped an enormous price tag on the Brazilian in an attempt to fend off interest from the Old Trafford outfit. Gakpo has emerged as a strong alternative option, although he predominantly plays down the left flank.

Gakpo, who turned 23 earlier this year, has been linked with a plethora of clubs this summer, including Arsenal, Liverpool and United. However, former Reds striker Van Nistelrooy appears relaxed about keeping hold of the winger, insisting there was nothing to update to the supporters on when he was asked about Gakpo's future in his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday night's huge Champions League play-off against Rangers.

"For me, Cody is a player that is ours," said Van Nistelrooy. "As long as there are no other news then he is ours.

"He is preparing for the game, as our squad is and I am too "I have to say because we are playing so many games and going from one game to another, we travel, that is the focus that I have and our players have.

"For us, it is a huge occasion (on Tuesday), as it is for Rangers, to try and get into the Champions League. So for us, it is the only thing that we are thinking of."

Gakpo, who has been on PSV's books since all the way back in 2007, has started this season strongly, scoring three goals and grabbing three assists in just five appearances in all competitions. He has picked up from where he left off last season, with his tallies in 2021/22 standing at 21 goals and 15 assists.

In the Eredivisie alone, Gakpo scored 12 goals and claimed 13 assists in just 27 appearances. He was a constant threat and it is understandable why so many clubs are sniffing around his signature.
