Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to join Ronald Koeman’s backroom staff with the Netherlands national team.

The former Manchester United striker had been one of the names tipped to succeed Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford as the Red Devils’ interim manager until the end of the current campaign.

The Dutchman was reportedly one of three names on a shortlist drawn up by the United hierarchy, along with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick.

Carrick ultimately won out, and he begins his second spell in caretaker charge of the club at home to Manchester City on Saturday.

United stated in their announcement of Carrick that the former England international would be the club’s head coach “until the end of the season”, with reports stating that United intended to appoint a different name in the summer.

Oliver Glasner, the Crystal Palace boss, emerged as the frontrunner in the wake of Amorim’s sacking.

Van Nistelrooy was a first-team coach at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag, and he took over the reins on an interim basis when ten Hag was sacked in October 2024.

Van Nistelrooy, who played 219 games for the club - scoring 150 goals - oversaw three wins and a draw in his four matches in charge, before he handed over the mantle to Amorim.

He departed the club shortly afterwards, with Amorim appointing his own backroom staff.

The Dutchman then took control of Leicester City in November 2024, replacing Steve Cooper as the Foxes fought relegation from the top flight.

However, van Nistelrooy could not keep the club up, and departed at the end of the campaign.
