Rutherglen Glencairn captain Tam Miller isn’t reading too much into their William Skinner Memorial Cup win over Cambuslang Rangers – but says they’re looking strong.
Miller collected the trophy after the game when goals from Darren Burns and Jack McIlveen gave them a 2-1 win over Camby, with Jay Nelson netting for the hosts.
That puts Glencairn into this weekend’s Townhead Tournament on a high, where they will face Cumbernauld United in their semi-final before playing either Lesmahagow or Cumnock on Sunday, depending on results.
But while Miller was happy with the win, he says it’s about fitness at this point in pre-season.
He said: “It was a good game, I thought we played really well.
“There’s not really much you can look into it, to be honest. It was our first game and a friendly, but I thought the boys did really well.
“It gets us minutes in the legs, but I thought we played really well as a unit.
“But you try not to look too far into these games.
“You don’t want to get too carried away, but on the other hand if you come off with a defeat from the pre-season games you don’t want to look too far into that, either.”
On the four-team tournament this weekend, Miller said: “We did something similar last year, it was a good tournament and again it’s good to see where you are against teams who are going to be round about you.
“The boys are looking forward to it, we seem to have everybody back and not carrying any injuries and stuff like that, so we’re actually looking pretty strong.
“I think we are a strong unit at Rutherglen Glencairn, and a tough team to beat.
“We kind of proved that in stages last season.
“I think, looking at the recruitment so far, I think we’ve done pretty decent business in certain areas.
“We still need maybe one or two brought in, possibly, but some of the guys from the under-21s look like a very good fit for our style of play, and we seem to have more depth in certain areas this season as well.
“I think that will stand us in good stead going into what is a very tough league, even wth us coming down.”
