Rutherglen Glencairn boss says signing defender was a 'no-brainer' as he adds to squad

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey says it was a ‘no-brainer’ to sign Craig Sideserf as soon as he heard the defender was available.

Harvey has long said that even with a settled squad, if a player pops up that can boost his squad he will always move on it.

And when learning that Sideserf had left rivals Cumbernauld United, Harvey moved swiftly.

He said: “Craig is a player we’ve admired for a while and when we found out he had left Cumbernauld we contacted him through his friend Jack McIlveen, and asked him if he would be interested.

“We knew he would be a good acquisition to our squad and brought him in to training to have a wee look at him again.

“But we didn’t really need to look at him, because we had seen him before against us at Cumbernauld, and we knew him from his under-21 and amateur days. He’s a decent signing for us and helps strengthen the squad.

“My philosophy has always been that we get to a stage where the squad is settled, and if something comes up that can benefit the team, and the squad, then we’ll always be interested.

“You’re going to come into the winter months where you need a good, strong squad, especially defensively.

“When we found out he was available it was a no-brainer to find out if he would be interested in coming to us. He goes straight into the squad for the weekend, he’s been training for the last couple of weeks.”

Harvey says his side is really starting to click as they prepare for a seemingly-rare home West of Scotland League First Division clash against Whitletts Vics on Saturday.

“We’re starting to play the way we’ve been asking them to, the players are buying into what we’re wanting, and we’re starting to get our rewards,” said Harvey.

“The strikers are becoming a really good partnership. They’re starting to recognise each others’ runs and knowing when to pass and when to hold. It’s good to see.

“We’re back at home on Saturday and I wonder if our players will remember how to get to our park, it has been that long since we’ve been there [three games].

“We’re looking forward to getting back, because our park is second-to-none – it really should suit the type of football we’re trying to play, so hopefully we can keep our winning streak going.”
