Fighters from Durie’s Amateur Boxing Club produced the goods at the club’s latest home show with four victories on an action-packed night at Rutherglen’s Kings Park Hotel.
The club hosted 10 bouts on Saturday night and there were some impressive performances from their youngsters as they competed against opponents from across the country.
Kicking off the show for the Rutherglen club was Cambuslang lad William Lafferty at 54kgs. The 14-year-old had lost his first three contests to date, but he made sure he was winning in this bout.
Straight from first bell, he took it straight to Barrhead opponent Kyle Wylie winning every round, plus the Barhead boxer received a standing 8 count.
William won by unanimous decision, much to the delight of his family and fiends in the audience.
To make it even better for William he was voted by the judges at the end as the best home boxer of the night also .
Next in for Duries was 15-year-old Cambuslang lad Jay Stewart at 54kgs. He was up against Toryglen’s Southside Boxing Academy kid Alan McCardle and this bout was a 100 mph, with both lads going at each other from the off.
In the second round, Rutherglen boxer Stewart raised the tempo even higher, forcing McCardle onto the ropes opening up with a 3/4 punch combination. He knocked the Toryglen boxer to the canvas, where the ref started the mandatory 8 count, but the ref decided he wasn’t in a fit state to continue and the bout was stopped in the second round.
The action continued with Rajmund Turtak from Govanhill in the 71 kgs, but he lost on points to Daniel Todd of Edinburgh’s Leith Victoria.
Lucas Ewan (50kgs) from Castlemilk lost in his bout on points to Shaun Townsend of Edinburgh’s Lochend ABC, while Abe Renton (64kgs) from East Kilbride also lost on points, to Adam Richie of Barrhead.
Defeat also followed for Kevin Turtak (67kgs) from Govanhill, as he lost his bout on points to Sean Smith (Barhead) and Jamie Durie (62kgs) from Cambuslang was beaten by James Devine (Govan).
In the 66kgs, Mo Karimi was up against Broadwood BC’s Kyle Brannan. Every time Mo goes in the ring you can expect fireworks and straight from the bell the Rutherglen boxer went for his opponent, who was game enough and made Mo work.
But after Brannan picked up an 8 count in the second round, it went to the judges and Mo came back as a unanimous winner.
Next in was East Kilbride boxer Lewis Connelly in the 66kgs. Lewis has been training and working hard for this bout and it showed on Saturday night with Lewis taking his bout by a unanimous decision.
Top of the bill saw Durie’s star Kyle McNeil from Castlemilk lose on points to Shaun Jackson of Irvine Elite ABC in the 60kgs,
However, it was a great night all round fro Durie’s ABC and coach Archie Durie said: “It was a great night once again where we had 10 of our boxers in action with four winners and six losers, but every single contest was very close even.
“I was delighted to see young William Lafferty pick up his first win and win best boxer. That was the icing on the cake for him.
“I would just like to thank everyone who sponsored a bout and to our three main sponsors ABH Contracts, 4x4 Hire and Buchan’s Towbars, who without their support we would not survive.”
