Production on the Western was paused in October 2021 when a prop gun being held by lead actor Alec Baldwin discharged, killing the cinematographer and injuring director Joel Souza and when shooting resumed 18 months later, the filmmaker was determined all weaponry would be "profoundly inert" but he praised the armorer who stepped in to replace Hannah Guiterrez-Reed - who is in jail for involuntary manslaughter as a result of the tragedy - for "relentlessly and meticulously" treating the props as real.
