Russian cosmonaut films Northern Lights above Earth

The crew of the International Space Station felt as if they were floating through it, cosmonaut Sergei Kud-Sverchkov wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to Kud-Sverchkov, the green glow comes from oxygen atoms at altitudes of about 100 kilometers, while the red glow originates at altitudes of 300–400 kilometers.

Red auroras are less common because higher and less dense layers of the atmosphere require more energy to produce luminescence.

The phenomenon was caused by a strong magnetic storm.
