Russia's Vera Zvonareva denied entry to Poland due to visa issue

NEW DELHI: Russian former world number two Vera Zvonareva faced a setback in her tennis career as she was denied entry to Poland, where she was scheduled to participate in next week's Polish Open WTA tournament.

The Polish interior ministry revealed that Zvonareva attempted to enter the country with a visa issued by France, but Polish border guards intervened during her flight from Belgrade, making it impossible for her to enter Poland.

"Vera Zvonareva was trying to enter our country with a visa granted by France, via a flight from Belgrade," according to a statement issued by the Polish ministry.

"On July 21, Polish border guards made it impossible for the Russian tennis player to enter Poland."

Unfortunately, the 38-year-old former Wimbledon and US Open runner-up found herself in a challenging situation, as she was listed as "undesirable" in Poland following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"Poland steadfastly opposes the regime of (Russian and Belarusian Presidents Vladimir) Putin and (Alexander) Lukashenko, not allowing people who support Russian and Belarusian actions to enter our country," the ministry stated, explaining their decision.

Despite the setback, the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), which governs the women's game, assured that they are aware of the situation and are committed to prioritising the safety and well-being of all players.

"The safety and well-being of all players is a top priority of the WTA. Vera has departed Poland, and we will be evaluating the issue further with the event," the WTA said in a statement.

Vera Zvonareva, who has enjoyed a successful tennis career with 12 career singles titles and four Grand Slam championships (two in doubles and two in mixed doubles), has also been instrumental in Russia's Fed Cup triumphs in 2004 and 2008.

Her world ranking has experienced a significant decline, dropping to 655th from her career-high number two ranking in 2010.
