Russia pneumonic plague: Reports of a suspected plague case in Siberia have put fresh attention on a disease that still exists in parts of the world. A woman working at an anti-plague research institute near Irkutsk reportedly became seriously ill and later died. Russian authorities have not publicly confirmed that plague caused her death, but the reports have led to medical monitoring and other precautionary steps in the region. At the same time, a new World Health Organization map shows where human plague cases were reported between 2019 and 2025.
