Russell Wilson injury: Mike Tomlin ‘extremely comfortable’ in Justin Fields’ readiness

After practicing the second half of training camp and playing in two preseason games, Russell Wilson’s calf is bothering him again. It’s what put him on Thursday’s injury report after practicing in a limited capacity.

Injuries are part of the game, and Mike Tomlin seems unconcerned that it will affect Wilson’s ability to play on Sunday. Should Wilson experience a setback between now and the Falcons matchup, Tomlin is equally unconcerned about Justin Fields‘ readiness.

“I’m extremely comfortable if that’s the case, certainly,” Tomlin told Steelers reporters when asked about the potential for Fields’ needing to play.

What other way would Tomlin feel? After all, Fields is the backup quarterback. It’s Pittsburgh’s job to select a capable No. 2 and Fields’ job as next-man-up.

Because of Wilson’s calf injury, sustained in pre-practice drills on the opening day of training camp, Fields took reps with the first team for the first two weeks.

Wilson is tough as nails (shout-out to Cam Heyward). Injuries account for just four of the six games he’s been inactive for in his 12-year career.

Tomlin said Wilson would have his calf examined “to exercise an abundance of precaution.”
