Russell Wilson sat out the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season opener with a calf injury, and his status for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos is in doubt. The Steelers have not yet ruled out the possibility of Wilson playing in Week 2, and the QB gave an update on his status on Thursday.
“I always want to go and play,” Wilson told media members in Pittsburgh. “At the end of the day, I believe you have to play dinged up sometimes. And I think Coach and the trainers just want to be smart too as well because it’s early in the season.”
After being limited in practice this week, Wilson is listed as questionable on the Steelers’ injury report. Wilson acknowledged Thursday that he would like to play, but he also understands the team does not want him to reaggravate the injury.
“I think right now, I want to go, but we also too want to be smart,” the QB said.
If Wilson is not cleared to play on Sunday, Justin Fields will start against the Broncos. Pittsburgh defeated the Atlanta Falcons 18-10 with Fields under center last week.
