Russell Martin's encouraging Millwall admission as Swansea City deliver after Cardiff City euphoria

Russell Martin admits Swansea City are currently playing the best football of his tenure to date following back-to-back wins in the Championship.

The Swans completed a historic South Wales derby double by thrashing Cardiff City 4-0 on Saturday. And they backed up that memorable triumph with an impressive 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Millwall at The Den three days later. You can read the match report here.

The triumph over Gary Rowett's side means Swansea have collected 10 of the last 12 points on offer to move on the cusp of the top half of the table. And Martin believes the Swans are showing their best form of the campaign so far at present.

"Definitely, and against teams that have tried really hard to press and stop us," responded the head coach when asked if this is the best period for the Swans under his leadership so far.

"The amount of courage the guys have shown, in the last four or five games, whatever it has been, especially away from home after Sheffield United which was a tough day for everyone, we took a lot of criticism and a lot of it was spot on, it was a difficult day.

"For the guys to bounce back how they have is testament to their character and their hard work, but most of all how brave they are. I hope our fans enjoyed it, I really enjoyed it."

Victory over Millwall lifted Swansea up to 14th place in the Championship, with Martin admitting the triumph in London was equally as impressive as Saturday's thrashing of Cardiff given the emotions surrounding the contest against the Bluebirds.

"That's equally as brilliant I think, in a different way because of the emotional and physical energy expended on Saturday, to back it up with a performance like that at a team that is in such good form and really well organised, I have a lot of respect Gary [Rowett] and his team, I like them a lot," he added.

"To play that way tonight was not easy. For them to do what they did, I really enjoyed it. I was so grateful for the courage the players showed and the intensity. I'm just feeling grateful for all of them, and the supporters who made the long journey. There were some beautiful moments at times."

Swansea return to action against Derby County on Saturday. Kick-off in south Wales is at 3pm.
