Rules on parking on pavements as Government considering full ban across England

It's an issue which causes problems on many streets up and down the country. With more and more households increasingly having more than one car, and many homes not having driveways, many residents often resort to parking on the pavement.

The Highway Code states that drivers should not park partially or wholly on the pavement unless signs permit it. But in terms of the laws laid out by the Government, it is only illegal in London.

While the Highway Code state that "parking on the pavement can obstruct and seriously inconvenience pedestrians, people in wheelchairs, the visually impaired and people with prams or pushchairs", powers to enforce this are currently limited. That could change soon, however. A consultation was launched by the Government in 2020 asking whether a change of existing pavement parking legislation should occur.
