Ruben Neves' decision on his future could have a direct impact on where Frenkie de Jong ends up this summer.
Manchester United have been linked with both players as Erik Ten Hag looks to add quality to the Red Devils' midfield.
Ruben Neves, who appeared to say an emotional farewell to Wolves in their last home game of the season, has been on United's radar for some time, while De Jong's previous relationship with Ten Hag has put him at the top of the incoming manager's shortlist.
Neves is expected to find a new club for next season, while reports claim Barca have put De Jong up for sale as they look to use the funds to add reinforcements and alleviate their current financial pressures.
Barcelona are also interested in acquiring Neves, however, with Sport reporting that the player's agent Jorge Mendes is in negotiations with the Spanish club eyeing him as a successor for Sergio Busquets.
But the report says that for a deal to work, De Jong will have to be sacrificed, which could pave the way for United to make their move for the Dutch international.
Neves is weighing up his options and his preference is to stay in the Premier League as he 'waits for United to make him an offer.' It's claimed Neves already has multiple offers from English sides but Ten Hag's men are not one of them.
De Jong has informed the Barcelona hierarchy of his desire to remain at the Camp Nou beyond this summer which means Neves might be a more realistic option for the club.
Barca chief Mateu Alemany has hinted that the club may need to sell players in order to make additions but the Netherlands international is not necessarily one of the players available this summer.
"We haven't made any decisions regarding the squad; Frenkie is a quality player, very important. We are conditioned by [financial] fair play, conditioned by the situation inherited by the club," Almeny said. "We must be patient. We are clear that we are going to reinforce the team. It is necessary and we want to compete for the titles next year."

Xavi spoke about De Jong's future last week and urged him to stay at Barcelona, suggesting he is not for sale.
"I haven't talked with him about his future," Xavi said. "He is playing at a very good level and has to continue here – he can be one of the best midfielders in the world for years to come. "If it were up to me, I would continue here for many more years. He is very important and can mark an era here. He has to score, assist and he has to be the protagonist."
