Ruben Neves aims cheeky dig at Liverpool following VAR controversy

Ruben Neves has taken aim at last night's officiating team by claiming tongue-in-cheek that 'three goals' were not enough to beat Liverpool.

Wolves earned a third round replay with the Reds after a whirlwind game at Anfield ended 2-2. Goncalo Guedes opened the scoring for the away side before two goals either side of half-time from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah turned the tide. Hwang Hee-Chan brought the game back level and when Toti poked home in the 82nd-minute, the Midlands side looked to have won it.

That was until the assistant referee raised his flag, adjudging corner taker Matheus Nunes to have been offside as he came back to retrieve a second ball. A lack of definitive camera angles provided for VAR meant that referee Andy Madley had to stick with the on-field decision - a decision that recent fan footage suggests was very tight at best.

Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui was visibly fuming on the touchline, insisting his analytical team had a tactical camera which showed Nunes to be onside. And both he and club captain Neves were in the referee's changing rooms shortly after the final whistle.

And after the game, Portuguese midfielder Neves posted a number of photos on his Instagram with the caption: "So proud of everyone!! Massive effort!! Unfortunately 3 goals at Anfield was not enough to go through, but now we will play at home!! A fantastic support from our fans as well. See you all on Wednesday [their EFL Cup game at Nottingham Forest ]."

Speaking shortly after the result, Lopetegui took the initial decision on the chin but bemoaned the lack of clarity from VAR. He said: "The offside that we had – we have seen it, the offside doesn't exist, I'm sorry. It's impossible.

"Someone has told him [the referee] it's offside, but we've seen the images, it doesn't exist. The decision is wrong. I make mistakes every day, and sometimes they do too. It is a pity, because I'm sorry, it's not offside."

With a winner not found in the eight minutes that followed that controversial decision, Liverpool and Wolves will meet again at some point between now and January 28 - the Saturday in which the next round of cup fixtures will take place. The exact date of the replay is not yet known, although with Lopetegui's side in Carabao Cup action this Wednesday, a midweek gap next week seems the most likely option.

A fourth round trip to Brighton and Hove Albion awaits the victor.
