Ruben Amorim, soon-to-be Manchester United manager, has made headlines with a stunning 4-1 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League.
Despite the triumph, Amorim was quick to play down his own role, humbly claiming that Guardiola “is so much better” than he is “at the moment.”
Amorim’s impressive final home match with Sporting CP, which featured a Victor Gyokeres hat-trick, has Manchester United fans buzzing for his arrival next week, hopeful he can bring similar success to Old Trafford.
A Fitting Farewell For Amorim
Amorim’s win over Manchester City was a fitting finish to his home stint with Sporting CP – one of Portugal’s most historic clubs.
His three-year tenure in Lisbon has been marked by transformative success, with Sporting winning multiple trophies and competing well on the European stage.
However, United presents an entirely different set of expectations and challenges. After the final whistle, Amorim sought to temper the rising hopes of United supporters by praising Guardiola and reminding them of the scale of the task ahead.
“He’s so much better than me at the moment,” Amorim said of Guardiola, one of his coaching idols. “But I believe a lot in my new club. We will start from a low level, and we will improve the team, the club.”
Amorim Addresses Man Utd Challenge Ahead Of Him
United are currently 13th in the Premier League, far below their historic standards, and Amorim is fully aware that the demands in Manchester will be higher and more complex than at Sporting.
While his time in Lisbon has prepared him to build a winning culture, he acknowledges that replicating this success with United’s current squad and competitive context will require a new approach.
“When I’m at the next club, the approach will have to be different,” he explained. “Not much is taken from here because we will have to play differently in the future. Both are historic clubs. It will certainly be a different game.”
Amorim’s first match in charge of United will be an away game against Ipswich Town on November 24, and United fans will be hoping it marks the beginning of a turnaround for a club that has been in a prolonged slump since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.
