RTE viewers hail Jim Gavin as a 'sporting great' after Late Late Show interview

Jim Gavin appeared on tonight's edition of The Late Late as he spoke about his formative years as well as his current work in the aviation industry and with the Citizen's Assembly.

Throughout the chat with Ryan Tubridy he reflected on how he gained core principles from his parents and also his days in the army that became mainstays of his approach to management with Dublin as they pulled off an historic five-in-a-row.

Chief amongst them were only focusing on useful emotions. He gave the example of how moaning to a referee about a missed call would have no positive impact on his team so he avoided wasting time and energy on it.

Another key part of his approach was based around empowering his players rather than ruling with an iron fist.

Viewers were enthralled by the rare insight since Gavin is generally such a private individual who eschews the spotlight.

And as such, the praise came rolling in on social media afterwards.

Declan wrote: "What a fascinating man Jim Gavin is."

Jimmy added: "You can see why Dublin thrived under Jim Gavin, he has a unique quality and comes across so well."

While Gerry said: "Jim Gavin has to be the best manager Dublin ever had along with Kevin Heffernan and one of nicest sportsmen you could ever meet.

"A very relaxed person tonight. Maybe on match days it was a different story. A sporting great."

Jack lauded: "Jim Gavin is fascinating. What I’d have done to be a fly on the wall during the five-in-a-row."

And someone else added: "It is very understandable why Dublin were as good as they were, Jim Gavin is a really well spoken and intelligent man. Shame the interview didn't go on for longer."

Lastly, Mike said: "One could listen to Jim Gavin all night. What a man, what a leader."
