Didi Hamann has long been a highly-respected pundit on Irish screens and beyond for his straight-talking approach.
And the latest example of this came when he pointed out that England really shouldn't be given too much credit for making the final of what was essentially a home tournament for them in the Euros.
He was speaking in the aftermath of winners Italy suffering an embarrassing defeat to lowly North Macedonia which means they will once again miss out on the World Cup.
He tweeted: "After seeing what happened to Italy last night I wonder whether last year's runner up spot is still deemed a success for England.
"Golden opportunity missed but still OBEs given out like smarties."
The tweet predictably struck a nerve with England fans but was broadly agreed with by followers from everywhere else.
While last summer was their best result at a major competition since the 1966 World Cup, it is fair to argue that an overly cautious approach by Gareth Southgate prevented their talented squad from fulfilling its full potential.
That he opted to deploy two holding midfielders in Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips summed up the risk-averse tactics.
While both are fine players, it seemed to stunt their attacking prowess as they only scored seven times over their six matches.
The final itself was a prime example of them not seizing the occasion when it was there for them after Luke Shaw made it a dream start in the second minute.
As the match progressed they ceded control more and more to The Azzuri until the equaliser finally came before ultimately succumbing to the latest in a long line of painful penalty shootout defeats.
In addition to that, the tournament as a whole had really opened up for them to end their trophy famine.
They had a relatively easy path to the final as they just had to see off an aging German team, Ukraine and Denmark to make it there.
And due to certain designated host cities like Dublin pulling out beforehand over Covid concerns, they got to play every game apart from that quarter-final stroll over Ukraine in front of a packed Wembley.
