RTE newscaster Eileen Dunne read her final Nine O’Clock News bulletin tonight after over four decades at Montrose.
The Dubliner was due to retire in April when she reached the age of 65, but decided to bow out a little early.
In a short address, she said: “This is my final bulletin after 42 years working for this wonderful organisation, and I’ve only ever been as good as the people behind me.
"A few thank yous, to my family and early mentors who got me here and sustained me.
"To my wonderful newsroom colleagues both in front of and behind the cameras, not to mention wardrobe and makeup.
"And finally to you the viewers, thank you for your support, especially during those turbulent Covid years.
"It’s been an honour and a privilege. See you on the other side.”
A montage of Eileen’s years as a reporter, presenter and newsreader was then shown.
Among the stories she presented to the nation were the announcement of the IRA ceasefire in 2005.
An RTE source told us: “Eileen decided to retire a little bit ahead of schedule, just because she can.”
