RTE legend Charlie Bird going through 'very tough' time as he cries every day

Charlie Bird has admitted that he is going through a "very tough time" and cries every day as he's posted his latest health update.

The veteran RTÉ reporter and journalist has been battling Motor Neurone's Disease since being diagnosed towards the end of last year.

Earlier in 2022, he and a whole host of friends and family members climbed Croagh Patrick, raising more than €3 million for charity in doing so.

And it seems that Charlie has another trick up his sleeves as he took to Twitter to update his followers on his situation - beginning with the joy he's feeling about receiving the freedom of Wicklow next week.

Accompanied by best pal Tiger, Charlie said: "Next Monday, I am being awarded the freedom of Wicklow. I'm following in the footsteps of Daniel Day-Lewis and the great Katie Taylor. Clearly, I am very honoured by receiving the freedom of my home county.

"But in my heart, I am accepting the award on behalf of every one of you out there who supported Climb with Charlie. All of you are the real heroes, and I would love for every one of you to be honoured as well.

"What you all have done is incredible and believe it or not there is still money trickling in for these two great charities."

However, he then opened up on his struggles.

Charlie continued: "I want to be honest, I'm going through a very tough period at present. Whatever is happening, I seem to end up crying every day. I have made this promise: as long as I can, I'm going to extend the hand of friendship to everyone who are battling their own mountains every day. Oh my God, there are so many people in that situation.

"So I'm working away with another idea in my head to extend the hand of friendship while I still can. My next project will be all about awareness. So thank you all again for the amazing kindness and friendship you have shown me."

Charlie also revealed his next big hope - to see Bruce Springsteen when he tours here in 2023.

He wrote: "This time last year I didn’t think I would reach my 73rd Birthday. But I have . So my next goal is Christmas and then with fingers and toes crossed get to see Brucie next May. Hopefully he sings Land of hope and Dreams."
