RTE explain reason for German commentary during PSG v Real Madrid in Champions League

RTE have explained why commentary during their coverage of PSG v Real Madrid suddenly switched to German on Tuesday night.

The Champions League knock out stages kick started this week, with the national broadcaster showing the mouth-watering clash between the French and Spanish sides.

And during the coverage, the audio briefly switched from Darragh Maloney to German commentary.

The sudden switch had left RTE viewers confused with people taking to social media to express their puzzlement.

One social media user wrote: "Lmao the commentary keeps cutting out and being replaced by the German commentary"

While another said: "RTÉ accidentally & intermittently switching to German commentary, the highlight so far."

And a couple of viewers cracked jokes after the switch of commentary.

One viewer said: "I didn’t realise Darragh Maloney was fluent in German"

While another joked: "RTE have a new German language option I see."

And RTE explained that it was an issue outside of their control.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, they said: "Last night's commentary of PSG v Real Madrid on RTÉ2 was briefly interrupted by German commentary.

"This was because of a technical issue in Paris and was outside of RTÉ's control. RTÉ commentary was restored as quickly as possible."

In the end, the game finished 1-0 after a late Kylian Mbappe strike gave PSG victory.
