RTE Claire Byrne Live viewers left 'heartbroken' after powerful episode on Ukraine crisis

Claire Byrne has been praised after a raw episode of Claire Byrne Live focused on the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The show opened with a sound of air raid sirens and spoke to a number of Ukrainian residents both in studio and in the likes of Kharkiv and Kyiv.

Peace talks have concluded on Monday, but bombing continues in some of the major Ukrainian cities.

Claire spoke to Ukranian MP Maria Mezentseva: "I still haven't reached my home city. Most of my colleagues find myself in the same way of living. We are out of the centre of Kyiv, because out district could've been targeted at any time."

A doctor was targeted as he was delivering blood to a donor clinic, according to Maria.

"We are dying here. There are some people who can't escape and reach out to water and food. This is a war crime. We will fight to the end."

Sasha Vakulina, Euronews reporter in Kyiv, told Claire: "We have heard alerts and sirens every 5-10 minutes in Kyiv. We hear explosions, we hear windows shattering. This is how Ukrainians are living."

Audience members explained how families were being split, how Ukrainian homes were being targeted by special "paint" from Russians, and that some were travelling back to fight.

One viewer tweeted: "The entire audience looks heartbroken with whats happening back in Ukraine, I can't imagine what I would be like if I was living in a different country and Ireland was being invaded"

A second added: "No man of 61 should have to risk his life to defend his country. This is heartbreaking we need to do more."
