The RSPCA has revealed that the number of dog cruelty cases reported to them since the start of Covid pandemic has surged to SIX A DAY across the North East. And the animal charity experts expect the number to rise still further over the summer.
New figures released as part of the animal welfare charity’s Cancel Out Cruelty campaign show that despite being man’s best friend there were 1,149 reports of dog cruelty in Durham, 936 in Tyne and Wear and 213 in Northumberland, a grim total of 2,299.
Across the UK there were 44,427 reports of dog cruelty made to the RSPCA involving 92,244 dogs last year. With more people becoming dog owners during lockdown the charity is concerned the number of cruelty incidents involving canines will increase - particularly in the summer when it traditionally sees a surge in calls to its cruelty line.
