Royal Navy frigate fleet shrinks as warship is ‘stripped of weapons’

  • HMS Iron Duke, a Type 23 warship, has reportedly been stripped of its weapons and sensors, effectively taking it out of service without official decommissioning.
  • This development has reportedly reduced the Royal Navy's active frigate fleet to just five vessels, according to specialist news website Navy Lookout.
  • The vessel has not been operational at sea since October 2025, following the government's cancellation of a planned conversion project for the frigate.
  • The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is progressing plans to replace its Type 23 frigates with eight new Type 26 and five Type 31 frigates, expected to join the fleet before 2030.
  • The MoD said that it is building a “hybrid Navy” and keeps planned out-of-service dates under continual review, with any decommissioning decisions to be announced in the usual way.
